Increase in passengers expected at Donegal Airport after turbulent two years

It’s been revealed that less than 40 passengers a day used Donegal Airport last year as the impact of the pandemic was felt by the facility.

However, a big increase in numbers is expected this year.

Figures released by the Central Statistics Office show that the number of passengers using the airport in Carrickfinn decreased to 19% to just 14,603 in 2021.

This was down on the 2020 figure of 18,067 passengers which, in turn, was a decrease of 62.8% on the 48,542 passengers using Donegal Airport in 2019.

Donegal Airport was one of the worst impacted due to the pandemic as the facility also lost its service to Glasgow during the same period.

However, the number of passengers using the airport is expected to rise this year with additional capacity on the Donegal – Dublin route being provided by Ireland’s newest airline, Emerald Airways, which began its service in March.
