Unionists to protest against Protocol in Derry

Thousands of Unionists will protest against the Northern Ireland Protocol in Derry tonight.

They’ll call for the post-Brexit trade deal to be scrapped when they gather at Newbuildings at 7.30.

The British government is planning legislation to over-ride the agreement with the EU – in a bid to ease Unionists’ concerns.

Stormont elections are taking place on May 5th – but the DUP says it won’t return to power-sharing if the protocol’s not scrapped.

Speaking to OceanFM news yesterday the Fermanagh/South Tyrone MLA, Jemma Dolan claimed that these reports will not distract attention away from the upcoming Stormont Assembly elections.

A new bill could be announced just days after the elections which would allow Boris Johnson’s government to remove parts of the protocol

Professor of Northern Irish politics, John Tonge  says the British government’s legislation is not the way to solve the row.
