Disappointment, shock, anger over Minister’s decision to grant prospecting licences for north Leitrim

The Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications and Transport, Eamon Ryan, has decided to issue prospecting licences to mining company Flintridge Resources for 47 townlands in north Leitrim.

In a statement, the Geoscience Regulation Office said that following a detailed review of all valid objections received, the Minister is satisfied to grant prospecting licences to Flintridge Resources for two areas (PL Areas 1469 and 3162).

The licences cover base metals and ores of gold and silver.

The Geoscience Regulation Office added that the decision has been taken following consideration of all the issues raised in submissions received.

It also said there was also an assessment of the application to ensure that the aactivity is licensed in accordance with relevant national legislation.

Last October, the Minister published notice of his intention to grant a prospecting licence to Omagh-based company Flintridge Resources for 47 named townlands in two separate areas, close to Manorhamilton.

Objectors had 30 days to make submissions to the Geoscience Regulation Office (GSRO).

Leitrim-based TD Martin Kenny says Minister Ryan’s decision is disapointing.
