Sligo beat Roscommon to reach Connacht U20 final

Sligo are through to next week’s Connacht under-20 football final following Wednesday evening’s spirited 1-12 to 1-11 victory over holders Roscommon at Markievicz Park.

Eoghan Smith’s point in added time knocked last year’s All-Ireland finalists out of this year’s competition, as Dessie Sloyan’s side set up a provincial decider against Mayo next Wednesday.

Listen back to Wednesday evening’s commentary of the game on Ocean FM here, as described by Austin O’Callaghan and Mark Breheny:

Roscommon were guilty of a lot wides during this game – but Sligo had chances themselves and missed a great goal opportunity in the second-half when Gavin Duffy blazed the ball high and wide from close range.

However, the home side never let the heads drop and battled back to claim the victory.

Team manger Sloyan paid tribute to the character shown by his players after the game.

Sligo U20 captain Jack Lavin also spoke with Ocean FM Sport’s Austin O’Callaghan after the win:

In Wednesday’s other semi-final in Carrick-on-Shannon, Mayo appeared to be in control against Leitrim for much of the hour – but two late goals from the home side saw Maurice Sheridan edge home by a single point, 0-16 to 2-9.

The final between Sligo and Mayo has been fixed for next Wednesday, April 20th, in the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence, at 7:30pm.

It will be broadcast live by TG4.
