The victim has been named locally as Michael Snee.

Gardaí subsequently assisted by the Armed Support Unit arrested a male in his early 20s in Sligo Town on suspicion of murder.

This male is currently detained under the provision of section 4 Criminal Justice Act at Sligo Garda Station.

Gardaí had earlier confirmed that they are conducting a murder investigation in relation to the death on Monday of Aidan Moffitt.

Gardai have also confirmed that they are investigating if any ‘hate related motive’  was connected with the incident.

They are also actively investigating if the deceased met his attacker online.
