Clancy defeated in semi-final



Sligo boxer Dean Clancy was unsuccessful in his attempt to reach the final of the Nicolae Linca Tournament following semi-final defeat to German David Gkevorgkian.

Fighting at 63.5kg, the Seán McDermott Boxing Club member is part of a 13-strong Ireland team for the tournament which is taking place in Targu Mures, Romania.

There was some success for Team Ireland in 63.5kg category, Brandon McCarthy (St. Michael’s B.C. Athy) qualified for the final following victory over Kenjaey Shobrunhbek of Uzbekistan.

This multi-nation tournament is named after Nicolae Linca, who won Olympic gold for Romania at Melbourne 1956, after edging Ireland’s Fred Tiedt on a split decision in the welterweight final.
