Warnings issued over future of Gaeltacht Summer Colleges

Gaeltacht spokespersons  are warning that the Summer Colleges sector is currently in crisis, with a real and present danger of long term damage being inflicted on the sector.

Some Gaeltacht Summer Courses that were due to take place this summer have been cancelled due to ongoing concerns in relation to Covid-19.

The extent of the crisis has already been reflected in findings from a recent survey conducted by CONCOS, the representative organization for Summer Colleges, on the number of homes in the Gaeltacht that will be accepting students from now on.

It’s expected there will be a reduction of over a 1,000 beds for students in the summer of 2022.

When the number of courses provided by these families is taken into account, there could be close to 3,000 fewer students attending the Gaeltacht this summer.

Peadar Mac Fhlannchadha, Advocacy Manager of Conradh na Gaeilge, Says it’s going to be a real challenge to find families to take in students this summer.

He says if these challenges are not met Gaeltacht areas such as those in Donegal will be impacted.
