Sligo Rovers women lose to Shels but still gain three points

Sligo Rovers were beaten 1-0 by SSE Aitricity women’s national league champions Shelbourne in Dublin on Saturday after conceding an injury-time goal.

Keeva Keenan was Shels matchwinner in the 90th minute which was cruel luck on Steve Feeney’s side – they had kept the champions at bay until that point.

There was some reprieve for Rovers on Saturday – after confirmation from the league that Rovers were to be awarded three points from their opening league fixture against Peamount United.

Peamount won the game 6-0 on March 5th but it’s since emerged that the Dubliners fielded an ineligible player.

In a statement on Saturday, Rovers said they accepted the decision of the WNL but confirmed that it did not result from any sort of appeal from Sligo Rovers FC.

The club said it had no knowledge of the issue until today (Saturday).

The points award moves Rovers onto six points and sixth place in the women’s national league table.

Shelbourne’s win moves them joint top of the table alongside Peamount on 12 points.

Saturday’s WNL results
Shelbourne 1 Sligo Rovers 0
Peamount Utd 4 Wexford Youths 1
Cork City 2 Bohemians 1
Treaty Utd 0 Galway 2
DLR Waves v Athlone Town OFF.
