Rovers frustrated as Shels win 1-0

A below-par Sligo Rovers team suffered their first defeat of the season in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division on Friday night as Shelbourne enjoyed a 1-0 win at the Showgrounds.

Dan Carr’s first-half penalty proved to be a matchwinner for Damien Duff’s side.

Rovers huffed and puffed – but their effectiveness up front was hampered by an injury to leading goalscorer Aidan Keena early on.

Seamie Keogh had an opportunity to equalise in the closing stages but his shot was saved by Shelbourne keeper (and former Rovers player) Brendan Clarke.

Rovers have two more home games to come in the next week, against Bohemians on Tuesday night – and against UCD next Saturday.

Friday night’s results
Sligo Rovers 0 Shelbourne 1
Finn Harps 0 Shamrock Rovers 3
Bohemians 1 Derry City 2
Dundalk 2 UCD 0
St Patrick’s Athletic 1 Drogheda United 1.
