Sligo Grammar School beaten in junior cup decider

There was disappointment for Sligo Grammar School in Wednesday’s Connacht Junior ‘A’ cup final at the Sportsground in Galway as they lost out to Marist College Athlone by 10 points to 7.

Tom Sheehan’s try in the corner with just three minutes of the match remaining proved to be the matchwinning score as Sligo Grammar’s brave bid to secure and Connacht senior and junior schools double in 2022 came up just short.

There match was still scoreless at half-time despite an entertaining contest with opportunities at both ends.

It was the Grammar who made the breakthrough in the early stages of the second-half with Diarmaid O’Connell forcing his way over for a try, which Mark Tempany converted.

However, Marist replied promptly moments later with Thomas Cotton finishing off a flowing Marist move to touchdown for the Athlone school.

The conversion was unsuccessful but Marist would have the final say in the dying moments through Sheehan’s late try.
