Cancer centre in Galway for west and north west included in National Development Plan

It has been announced that the provision of a new, fit-for-purpose cancer centre in Galway, and an improved cancer-care network, for the west and north west of Ireland has been included in the National Development Plan for 2021 to 2030.

The Centre is to care for patients in the entire and north west of Ireland where, experts say, a cancer pandemic is competing with emergency and elective healthcare for resources..

The announcement this morning describes it as arguably the single biggest commitment to health in the west and north west in a generation.

Prof. Michael Kerin, Director, Saolta-NUI Galway Cancer Network, says the West and Northwest have the highest national incidence of cancer and the lowest survival rates for breast and lung cancer.

He has been telling Ocean FM News about today’s annoucement.
