Strand Celtic bow out of Connacht Junior Cup

Strand Celtic’s run in this season’s Connacht Junior Cup came to an end at the quarter-final stage on Sunday when they were beaten 2-0 by Athenry of Galway at Ray MacSharry Park.

Strand trailed 1-0 at half-time and pressed hard for an equaliser after the restart.

But the visitors made the game safe with 12 minutes remaining when they headed in a second to make it 2-0.

Strand’s exit brings to end any remaining Sligo-Leitrim interest in this season’s Connacht Junior Cup.

Athenry now face Salhill Devon in the competitions in the semi-finals.

Castlebar Cetlic play Ballinasloe Town in the other semi.
