Fermanagh no match for Down in Ulster U20 championship

Fermanagh’s under-20 gaelic footballers were eliminated from the Ulster Championship on Friday night by Down on a final scoreline of 2-13 to 0-7 in their preliminary round game in Newry.

Down, who are the Ulster holders at this grade, took charge of the contest in the early moments with Adrian Crimmins fourth-minute goal helping them to establish a 1-7 to 0-2 first-half lead.

The Erne men were unable to make any meaningful headway into the Down lead in the second-half.

Fionan O’Brien was accurate from the frees for Fermanagh, scoring 0-6, but Down, who are managed by Kilcoo’s All-Ireland club winner Conor Laverty, were never in trouble.

They wrapped up the victory in the closing stages with a second goal, this time from Oisín Savage, to close out a 2-13 to 0-7 success and set up a quarter-final meeting with Tyrone next weekend.

Garry Duffy’s Donegal begin their Ulster championship challenge against Armagh next Friday night at MacCumhaill Park in Ballybofey (8pm).
