All-Stars clinch Superleague return

EJ Sligo All-Stars can look forward to Superleague basketball domestically for the first time in 20 years following Saturday night’s 94-68 victory over IT Carlow in the men’s Division 1 semi-final at the Mercy College gym.

Roared on by boisterous home support, the All-Stars controlled this game from start to finish, leading 27-13 at the end of 1st quarter, 47-29 at half-time and 72-43 at the end of the third.

They’ve still a play-off final to come against either UCC Demons or Grand Hotel Malahide, who meet on Sunday, but with both finalists assured of a place in the Superleague next season, Shane O’Meara’s side can begin celebrating their return to domestic basketball’s top tier for the first time since 2002.

Head coach Shane O’Meara said: “I’m over the moon for the players, they’ve invested so much time and energy into our league campaign. They’ve grown as a team and as individuals and they’re showing all our academy players what it means to be part of a team, part of a club.

“Our club executive and volunteer groups are second to none in ensuring that all the needs of our team are met and that the game is promoted in the right way.”
