Leitrim man says fertiliser costs crippling NW farmers



A local farming official says rising Fertiliser costs are crippling farmers across the north west.

Fertiliser prices more than doubled in the year from January 2021 to 2022.

CSO figures show they went up 127 per cent.

Fertiliser is currently being quoted at 900 euro per tonne.

Last week it was averaging 720/730 per tonne while in 2021 the quoted price as 240-270 euro per tonne.

Brendan Barry is the Leitrim Chair of the Irish Beef and Lamb Association.

He says farmers have big decisions to make as to the number of livestock they can keep afford to keep on
