Sligo Grammar crowned Connacht schools rugby kings



Sligo Grammar School have been crowned Connacht School’s Rugby Senior ‘A’ Cup champions following a 15 points to 10 victory over Coláiste Iognáid (The Jes) at The Sportsground on Tuesday afternoon.

The Galway city school start perfectly with a try of their through full-back Ben O’Malley which Patrick Nash converted.

Nash increased his side’s lead with a penalty just after.

With in an instant of Coláiste Iognáid’s penalty, Sligo Grammar responded with vital points of their own.

Winger Jonjo Devine crossed the whitewash in front of a boisterous crowd at College Road.

Earl Norris reduced arears with a penalty just before the interval.

The second half was a tight and hard-fought with both teams up against the wind and rain.

The dream moment arrived for Sligo Grammar School in the dying minutes. Seán Gilvarry made a blistering line break and was stopped just short of the line. Substitute Matthew Ryan found the ball in his hands and made a drive for the try line and scored the decisive try for his side. Earl Norris was successful from the resulting conversion.

The win is Sligo Grammar School’s first since Senior Cup 2014 and ensures the completion of a league and cup double.
