Letterkenny hospital third most overcrowded in country today

Letterkenny University Hospital is the third most-overcrowded hospital in the country today.

It has 46 patients waiting for beds, with 20 in the emergency department and 26 in wards and elsewhere.

Only two other hospitals are more overcrowded that Letterkenny; they are University Hospital Galway with 54 patients waiting and 68 in University Hospital Limerick.

Thirteen people are waiting for beds in Sligo University Hospital, 11 of whom are in the emergency department.

Overall throughout the country today, 515 people are in hospitals waiting for beds.

Meanwhile, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation is calling for the immediate implementation of Sláintecare in its original form, saying Irish hospitals aren’t good for your health.

It’s among a number of healthcare unions addressing the Oireachtas health committee today to highlight that already this year, over 21 thousand patients have been left on trolleys.

General secretary of the INMO, Phil Ni Sheaghdha, says the powers-that-be need to get Sláintecare up and running straightaway.
