Renewed calls for Armed Response Unit to be based in Sligo

Increased aggravated burglaries, a growing culture in organised crime, the increasing culture of drug use and the availability of illicit substances in Sligo are all reasons why an Armed Response Unit of An Garda Siochána should be permanently based in Sligo.

Those are the views of a Sligo Councillor who has tabled a motion on the issue for today’s meeting of the local Authority.

Sligo Drumcliff Councillor Thomas Walsh says geographical and human resource allocation of the Armed Support Units are subject to regular reviews.

The Fine Gael Councillor says the public and Gardaí in the Sligo Leitirm region need rapid access to armed officers should the need arise.
