‘No real accolade to be in the league’ of hospital overcrowding says former INMO President

A former Irish Nurses and Midwives organisation President says it’s ‘no real accolade’ for north west hospitals to be ‘third and fourth in the league’ of hospital overcrowding.

Martina Harkin Kelly made the comments following the latest INMO figures showing Sligo and Letterkenny University Hospitals had the third and fourth highest overcrowding figures this week with 393 patients without a bed.

Sligo was third worst with 198 and Letterkenny was fourth with 195 people being forced to wait.

Sligo University Hospital is also, for the second day in a row, the most impacted when it comes to Covid-19 patients.

HSE figures show there are 64 people receiving treatment in the hospital, up from yesterday’s figure of 59.

The Oireachtas Health Committee is to discuss overcrowding in Irish hospitals on Wednesday next where the INMO will provide their latest analysis to the Government.

Speaking to OceanFM News, Martina Harkin Kelly says there are many issues within the Health Service Executive that needs addressing.

She says, for example, recruitment is a ‘drag heel process.’

Martina Harkin Kelly also painted a stark picture of what life is like for workers across the health service.
