Work underway on Great War memorial garden in Sligo

Contractors have begun laying the foundations for Sligo’s Great War memorial Garden at Cleveragh on the outskirts of Sligo town.

The memorial will comprise eight upright granite panels engraved with the names of those from Sligo who died in the Great War of 1914 to 1918.

The names will be grouped according to townlands, parishes and localities in County Sligo.

Tommy Higgins is chairman of the ‘Lest Sligo Forgets’ committee, which is spearheading the project.

He says he’s delighted to see the foundations for the memorial now being laid after the stoppage of work due to Covid.

Speaking to Ocean FM News from the site earlier today (Wednesday), he outlined the up-to-date work situation.
