Leitrim councillor supports Sligo colleagues in call for more investment in CCTV to prevent crime

Calls are growing for increased investment in CCTV camera technology in the north west to deter burglaries, robberies and assaults.

It follows two recent attacks, one on a garda near Blacklion earlier this week, the other on January 18th last of 73-year old Tom Niland in his home along the N59 road at Doonflin, Skreen.

He remains on life support in Sligo University Hospital.

More than a dozen Sligo county councillors have put down a motion for next Monday’s council meeting calling for funding of €100,000 for a pilot scheme to upgrade CCTV systems at a range of locations located on various access roads.

A similar call was made this morning by Leitrim Fine Gael Councillor Sean McDermott.

The Sligo councillors want grants of €1,000 for upgrading cameras to include nighttime number plate recognition.

Cllr Michael Clarke says criminals and robbers avoid areas where there are cameras.

Manorhamilton MD Councillor Sean McDermott says an upgrade of infrastructure would be of benefit to the Gardai when it comes to investigating incidents such as the attack on an unarmed garda close to Blacklion earlier this week.

Cllr McDermott says financial support must be provided to rural communities when it comes to trying to prevent criminal activity.
