Ballyshannon, Ballymote to get funding under Historic Towns Initiative

Ballyshannon is to receive a quarter million euro under the Historic Towns Initiative with the Heritage Council.

Ballymote, Co. Sligo, is to get €40,000 under the scheme for a heritage-led regeneration plan for the town.

The €250,000 for Ballyshannon will support work with the owners of seven buildings on The Mall and on Main Street to conserve the historic built environment.

It will include the historic town clock building, the old Castle Hardware and Dorrian’s Pharmacy.

Ballyshannon and Ballymote are among 13 historic towns throughout the country that will share a total of €1.75m.

Ballyshannon-based Fine Gael Councillor Barry Sweeney says the allocation is good news for Ireland’s oldest town.
