Motorists in Donegal, Sligo caught speeding on Slowdown Day, which continues until 7am Wednesday



Gardai are conducting high visibility checks on routes across the north west today as part of National Slow Down Day, which continues until tomorrow morning.

So far, motorists in various areas have been caught speeding, among them a person travelling at 69km per hour in a 50km zone on the N15 at Ballinphull, near Cliffoney in north Sligo.

Another motorist was found travelling at 90km per hour in a 60km zone on the R267 at Portnason, Ballyshannon.

More than 1,300 speed enforcement zones are monitored until 7am tomorrow.

The Road Safety Authority says almost a third of road deaths here in Ireland are caused by speeding.
