Leitrim Councillor calls for concessions to be given to rural learner drivers



A Leitrim Councillor says concessions must be made for learner drivers in rural areas where there is inadequate public Transport services.

 

Cllr Padraig Fallon was reacting to the fact that the number of learner drivers who got penalty points for not being accompanied by a fully qualified motorist, increased by 35 per cent last year.

 

According to freedom of information files, 5,755 penalty point notices were issued for the offence in 2021.

 

The Sinn Fein Councillor says the current legislation is forcing many young people off the roads and restricting their employment and education prospects
