Councillor says people shocked, angered over attack on garda in Blacklion area



A local Councillor in Blacklion, Co Cavan says the local community is shocked and angered by the assault on an unarmed uniform Garda which took place in the early hours of yesterday morning

The incident took place at Loughan, Blacklion.

Gardai are continuing to investigating the circumstances of the assault on the unarmed, uniformed garda at about 2am in the Loughan area, near Blacklion.

He had been attacked and doused in an accelerant.

When gardai arrived at the scene, they found their colleague in a disorientated state and unable to explain what happened.

His official marked patrol vehicle was present at the scene.

He was taken to Sligo University Hospital.

Local Fianna Fáil Councilor John Paul Feeley is urging anybody that may have information on the attack to contact the Gardai.

Chief Superintendent Alan McGovern, of the Cavan Monaghan Garda Division,. said this is a very serious and concerning attack on an unarmed garda going about his normal duties keeping people safe.

The exact motive for this attack is yet to be determined.

James Morrisroe, GRA Representative for the Cavan/Monaghan Division, described the attack as ‘an horrific and vicious assault..

He said it once again highlights the dangers faced by GRA membership while on duty on a daily basis.

He added that in recent years they had seen increases in the number and viciousness of such attacks.
