Car fuel tax needs to be reduced says Sligo Cllr

A Sligo Councillor says the tax on petrol and diesel needs to be reduced as it is contributing to the spiralling cost of living.

55% of the price of petrol and around 50% of the diesel price is government tax.

According to research carried out by the AA, it cost an average of €1,554 to fill a 50 litre tank car in 2020.

This figure has increased by 38% over the past two years now costing an averge of €2,149, if prices remain at the current price, which is an increase of €595.

Speaking to OceanFM News, Councillor Gino O’Boyle believes the state needs to invest in the required infrastructure before imposing higher taxes on people with no viable fuel or energy alternative.
