Politicians concerned about their personal safety

The Sinn Fein spokesman on justice and equality, Sligo/Leitrim TD Martin Kenny says politicians are becoming increasingly concerned for their safety as the country emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic.

TDs, Senators, and ministers are to receive briefings on security measures from An Garda Síochána later this month.

Politicians will also be able to avail of garda security reviews of their constituency offices.

During the coronavirus pandemic groups of anti-lockdown and anti-vaccine activists held protests outside the homes of several politicians, including Tánaiste Leo Varadkar and Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly.

In 2019 Deputy Kenny was the victim of an arson attack at his home in Auhavas in County Leitrim.

He says it’s a problem that has been ongoing but has got worse in recent years.
