Major new retrofitting scheme to be announced today

A  north west Green party member says a new energy scheme which will be announced today will provided households with ways of making drastic savings when it comes to running their homes.

Cabinet will sign off on a 352 million euro home retrofitting plan this morning.

More than 25,000 euro will be offered to people conducting a full retrofit, covering around half the cost.

Up to 80 per cent of smaller projects, like attic or cavity wall insulation will be made available – which will reduce the cost of those projects to in the region of 300 euro.

Low interest Government loans will also be available later in the year.

Up to 400 energy upgrades a month will be conducted for low income families free of charge.

Applications for the new grants will open in the coming weeks, with plans to set up one-stop-shops where people can get homes assessed, apply for grants and have work carried out.

More than 8 billion euro has been allocated in the National Development Plan out to 2030, with the Government saying securing steady and guaranteed work for contractors will be an important part of the retrofit plan.

Green Party Executive Committee member Blaithin Gallagher says the scheme will reduce heating costs.

The Constituency secretary and spokesperson says the scheme will also benefit the environment.
