Ballinode Community College celebrating 50 years

Ballinode Community College in Sligo is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

As it now embarks on a new half century, it’s eager to continue its pioneering role as a co-educational, multi-denominational school with modern, state-of-the-art facilities.

That’s the sound that today marks the change of classes in Ballinode Community College.

But the corridors of Ballinode have been echoing to the hustle and bustle of students for half a century.

And in that time, much as changed, as Principal David McGuinness, a native of Strandhill, Co. Sligo, has been telling Ocean FM News.

But if there has been change in the education system over the past 50 years, the last 10 years in particular have been a time of both challenge and opportunity — which Ballinode Community College has embraced with enthusiasm.

A large number of Ballinode Community College past-students now go on to third level while they are also employed in an array of jobs and a variety of professions.

David McGuinness says the college caters for ALL students, with an emphasis on student support.

He also says education is not only about classes and subjects — but the overall student experience.
