Harkin wants ‘absolute clarity’ from government that Sligo Airport will be SAR base

Sligo/Leitrim Independent TD Marian Harkin says she wants ‘absolute clarity’ from the government that Sligo will be one of the country’s four Sea Air Rescue bases.

She was responding to a statement earlier today from Minister and Sligo/Leitrim Fine Gael TD Frank Feighan who said cabinet had taken a decision that Sligo will be one of the four SAR bases in the country.

Deputy Harkin, in a statement issued this (Tuesday) evening, also says Sligo is the only airport of the four current bases in the country that receives no Government funding — except for the once-off €200,000 grant this year.

She says this is tiny compared to funding for other airports, adding that it is a situation that must be addressed in order to help guarantee the future viability of the airport at Strandhill.
