John Mahon set to leave Sligo Rovers for St Johnstone

Sligo Rovers Player of the Season in 2021, John Mahon, is poised follow Johnny Kenny to the SPL in the coming days.

The Irish Independent reported on Friday that the defender is poised to join St Johnstone in the coming days.

Mahon, who had signed a new two-year contact extension at the Showgrounds at the end of last season, has been one of Rovers most consistent performers in recent years.

His central defensive partnership with Garry Buckley earned widespread praise during the 2021 campaign.

The Collooney man had been linked with several cross-channel moves in recent years – but now it appears that St Johnstone are on the verge of securing his signature.

The Scottish are currently bottom of the SPL and in a relegation battle – athough they did win both Scottish Cups last season.

Mahon’s departure, if confirmed, would mean men that Sligo Rovers have now lost arguably their two best performers last season – Mahon and Kenny – to the SPL.

It’s understood St Johnstone have agreed to pay Rovers a six-figure sum for the 22-year-old.

The Scottish side recently signed Dundalk defender Daniel Cleary, who may yet be a defensive partner for the Sligo man.
