Compulsory Purchase Orders could be used to acquire burial grounds

The procedure for Compulsory Purchase Orders for two new burial grounds in Sligo will begin in March this year if agreements cannot be reached by then.

Councillor, Donal Gilroy, says for over 20 years, the local authority have sought new grounds for Ahamlish and Rosses Point.

He says no Councillor wants to disappoint any landowner but it has gotten to a stage where it ‘needs to be sorted.’

Councillor Gilroy says, for example, Drumcliffe Parish have had to cater to neighbouring parishes for past decade and there are fears this plt of land will also reach capacity in the near future.
