Co Sligo Golf Club vandalised

County Sligo Golf Club is repairing damage to part of its course after a car drove onto the fairway of the signature eighth hole at Rosses Point on Saturday night.

The vehicle caused significant damage to this section of the course after a series of handbrake turns or ‘donuts’ were carried out in front of the championship tee on the eight hole.

This part of the course is accessible from the Lower Rosses area in Rosses Point.

David O’Donovan, General Manager of Co Sligo Golf Club, said similar damage to the course has happened before.

He’s appealing for anybody who saw unusual activity in the vicinity of the course on Saturday night or Sunday morning to contact the Gardaí.

“If people are out there and see cars in the golf course area that they know shouldn’t be there, please contact the Gardaí.

“It is significant damage – and it’s disappointing for our club members to wake up to damage like this.

“There’s a body of work for our greenkeeping staff to do now to fix it. It’s an eyesore and the damage at this time of the year makes the repair work a little more challenging

“The lucky thing is that the seventh green, which is nearby, wasn’t damaged.”

County Sligo Golf Club is preparing the host its signature event, the West of Ireland Championship, in April.

The event returns to its traditional Easter weekend dates (April 15th-19th) this year.
