Anomalies around planning must be addressed in Leitrim County Development Plan

A Leitrim Councillor is highlighting as what he describes as ‘unfair obstacles’ that are being place in the way of those looking to build once off housing in Leitrim.

Planning meetings will take at Municipal District and at County Council level in the coming days to discuss such issues with the Councillors in Manorhamilton District due to meet remotely today in relation to the construction of the county Development plan for 2023-2029.

Many people looking to build once off housing in Leitrim have been left frustrated by the regulations surrounding planning permission in the past and have ditched the idea of constructing their own houses opting instead to purchase housing in urban areas in towns elsewhere.  This has led to fears that unless changes are made to the planning process in Leitrim many rural areas will have little or no population in the near future.

A new research programme in association with Trinity College will trial a new percolation system that, if successful, would help applicants meet environmental requirements.

Once local councillor while welcoming such moves says it’s unfair Leitrim have to go through these measures while other neighbouring counties are not subjected to the same scrutiny.

Ahead of today’s meeting of the Manorhamilton Councillors Cllr. Sean McDermott spoke to the OceanFM.
