25 Sheep mauled to death by dogs on Leitrim farm

A local IFA sheep representative says a lack of action by various state agencies is one of the main reasons behind the large number of dog attacks on sheep in the North West region.

Leitrim farmer and IFA National Sheep Committee Vice Chairman Kevin Comiskey was reacting to the killing of 25 sheep by dogs in Drumkeerin over the Christmas period.

Mr Comiskey who is currently contesting an election to become the IFA’s National Sheep Chairman has raised this issue many times in the past.

This most recent attack which took place outside Drumkeerin in North Leitrim is being described as ‘particularly horrific’.

Speaking to ocean FM News Kevin Comiskey says it’s a devastating blow for the farmer that owned the sheep which were brutally killed

The North West farming official is making the worrying prediction that these attacks will continue unless action is urgently required.  He says that local Councils are not being provided with enough resources to follow through when it comes to prosecuting the owners of the dogs that commit the attacks.

In recent figures when it comes to local authorities prosecuting dog owners only 82 prosecutions and 198 dogs were sized in the entire country in 2020.

Kevin Comiskey says Minister for Agriculture and Charlie McConalogue and Minister for Heritage Malcom Noonan have to implement change.
