Mona McSharry reaches World semi-finals

Mona McSharry is through to the semi-finals of the women’s 50 metres breaststroke at the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Abu Dhabi.

McSharry finished third in 29.90 secs in Heat 7, the fastest of Thursday morning’s seven heats, to qualify fourth quickest overall for the semi-finals.

Speaking after her swim this morning, McSharry said: “I haven’t raced at a Worlds in quite a while now. That’s a really good race to set me up. It felt great. I love the buzz, so I’m just excited to see what comes next.”

McSharry is competing in four individual events in Abu Dhabi this week: the 50m, 100m and 200m breast-stroke – and the 100m Individual Medley.

She’s part of an 11-strong Ireland team, which includes seven Olympians.

Her 50m breaststroke semi-final will take place on Thursday afternoon at 2.23pm (Irish time).
