Measures are needed to tackle homeless crisis in North West

A local TD say has claimed that whereas the extension of notice periods for tenant’s bill which was discussed in the Dáil last night is ‘not ideal’ it is needed to address a major homeless crisis in the North West.

The private members bill sought a three-month extension of notice periods for tenants certified as being at-risk of homelessness.

The Bill provides a tenant who is at risk of eviction and is unable to secure alternative accommodation a three-month stay on the exit on foot of a recommendation from the local authority.

Sligo Leitrim Independent TD Marian Harkin says there are many men, women and children currently facing the prospect of being homeless in the North West.
