A national ‘double’ for Sligo-Leitrim youth teams

Sligo-Leitrim youth soccer is celebrating two national titles following victories in both the boys under-14 Kennedy Trophy final and the girls under-13 Gaynor Shield final on Sunday.

The boys beat North Tipperary 1-0 after extra-time in Kennedy Trophy decider, played at the University of Limerick.

Sligo-Leitrim manager John McAteer spoke to Austin O’Callaghan about the win.

‘There’s a lot of representation from both Sligo and Leitrim.

‘This means a lot to the players, their parents and their families.”

A short time later, on the same pitch, the Sligo-Leitrim girls beat Clare 1-0 to lift the Gaynor Shield for 2021.

Team manager Neal McKenna spoke to Ocean FM Sport’s Austin O’Callaghan from the team bus after the win.

“It’s great for the girls. They’ve really put the work in over the last couple of years.

“We’ve been training twice a week, sometimes three times – the girls topped it off today with the win.

“From 1 to 18, they’ve done us proud.”
