Sligo athletes star at national cross country championships

There were national cross country titles for two Sligo runners at Sunday’s Irish Life Health National Novice & Uneven Age Cross Country Championships at Gowran Park in county Kilkenny.

Sligo Athletic Club’s Eavan McLoughlin won the women’s 4000 metres race in fine style, finishing ahead of the Letterkenny AC duo of  Christine Buckley (2nd) and Noeleen Scanlan (3rd).

There was also a super run by South Sligo AC teenager Francis Donoghue who won a thrilling boys under-15 race earlier in the day.

North Leitrim AC’s Sarah Brady finished 25th in the women’s U19 race.

She was the first Connacht runner home in that race.

Elsewhere, North Sligo Athletic Club’s Feidhlim McGowan set a new PB for the men’s marathon in Valencia on Sunday.

McGowan, running in the North Sligo singlet, clocked a new best time of 2hrs 22mins 35secs.

The time improved his own County Sligo record for the 26.2 mile distance, which he set in 2019.
