Vacant commercial rates could lead to new businesses and jobs

An Independent Sligo Councillor says if the Council collected rates on vacant commercial properties and introduced a refund and incentive scheme it would to the creation of new businesses.

Councillor Declan Bree says such a scheme could potentially generate between €500,000 and €750,000 a year for the local authority.

Councillors are set to vote on the measure at today’s Statutory Budget meeting for 2022.

Councillor Bree says Sligo has one of the highest rates of vacant commercial properties in the country.
