Sligo rates to remain same; sliding scale for vacant properties



Sligo county councillors have decided to leave commercial rates that are paid by businesses at the same level as last year.

They made the decision at today’s budget meeting of the council at which there was also a lengthy discussion on the payment of rates of vacant properties.

Cllr Declan Bree said if the council collected rates on vacant commercial properties and introduced a refund and incentive scheme it would lead to the creation of new businesses.

In the end, councillors took a middle-of-the-road approach with a sliding scale of rates for vacant premises.

After the meeting, Cathaoirleach Cllr Paul Taylor spoke to Ocean FM News.
