Update on Sligo’s efforts to secure a Catherisation laboratory due in December



It’s likely to be a number of months before it will be known if a permanent cardiac catherisation laboratory could be provided at Sligo University Hospital.

 

There has been a long-running campaign for a permanent cath lab, which plays a key role in the treatment of a variety of conditions, including those of the heart.

 

A temporary cath lab had been visiting the hospital one day a week.

 

Provision of a permanent lab is to be considered as part of an ongoing national review of cardiac services. That review had originally been due to be completed in June 2019.

 

Following delays arising from the Covid pandemic, the group involved in the review has now restarted meetings and consideration of outstanding issues.

 

In a response to Sligo Fine Gael Councillor Thomas Walsh, the office of the minister for health has stated that the timeline for the completion of the review should become clearer following the December meeting.
