Presidents visit will give recognition to those involved in the Connaught Rangers mutiny

The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council says the presence of the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, in Tubbercurry today will give national recognition to those involved in the Connaught Rangers mutiny in India more than 100 years ago.

Four Sligomen — James Gorman from Tubbercurry; Patrick Dyer from Keash, Ballymote; and Martin Conlon and Jack Scanlon, both from Sligo town — were involved in the mutiny in protest against the activities of British forces in Ireland, including the reprisals by the Black and Tans.

During his visit to Tubbercurry, President Higgins will unveil a memorial stone bearing the four men’s names.

Cllr Paul Taylor says the President’s visit is a very special occasion for relatives of the men, as well as for the town of Tubbercurry and the county.
