New Technological University confirmed for the North West

A new Technological University for the North West has been confirmed today my Minister for Higher Education, Simon Harris.

Following the successful application by ITSligo, LYIT and GMIT, the multi campus University will encompass eight locations across Sligo, Donegal, Mayo and Galway.

This is the fourth such institution to be created in Ireland since 2019 with the next step requiring Minister Harris to set a day for when the Connacht-Ulster Alliance Technological University will be legally established.

Sligo/Leitrim Fianna Fail TD, Marc MacSharry is hopeful St. Angela’s College will be incorporated into ITSligo before the university is officially established.

Independent Deputy, Marian Harkin is welcoming the fact that students graduating in the 2021-2022 academic year will receive a university qualification.

Minister of State at the Department of Health, Frank Feighan says the establishment is a ‘game changer’ for the north west.

He says it’s the first time in the history of the state that there is a university north of the Galway/Dublin line.
