Life at 90 – Fr ‘Ricky’ Devine shares Sligo sporting memories

This Thursday night, Ocean FM brings you a special interview with one of the signature names associated with sport in Summerhill College and Sligo down through the decades – Fr Michael ‘Ricky’ Devine.

A former pupil and teacher at Summerhill, he was the man who introduced soccer, basketball and even wrestling to the college with staggering success.

He guided Summerhill College to multiple all-Ireland soccer titles and a place at the 1971 European Schools Championships in Switzerland.

He created Summerhill’s first past pupil’s union – which led to the formation of Collegians FC – one of junior soccer’s most famous clubs in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

Today, he lives in Florida – but to celebrate his 90th birthday this month, he has returned home for reunions this weekend with surviving members of Collegians FC and that historic Summerhill team which competed in Europe in 1971.

Fr ‘Ricky’ Devine’s interview will be broadcast on ‘The Final Whistle’ on Ocean FM this Thursday night (Oct 28th) at 8:05pm.
