North West MEP says there’s increasing demand for more eco and animal friendly food

A Midlands/North West MEP says consumers are demanding more eco and animal friendly food.

Maria Walsh was speaking as the European Parliament backed a resolution calling for a new “farm to fork” strategy.

MEPs want the EU to set standards that ensure food, including meat, is both environmentally and animal friendly.

According to EU statistics, only 1.6 per cent of agricultural land in Ireland is organically farmed.

That compares to more than 25 per cent in Austria.

Maria Walsh says digital media is influencing people about what they eat.
