N4 Action Group chairman recalls long campaign for new road

One of the country’s biggest road projects in the country will be officially opened by Taoiseach Micheal Martin in Sligo this afternoon.

It’s the new €80m N4 dual carriageway between Collooney and Castlebaldwin, constructed by the company Roadbridge.

The new 14 kilometre route replaces an old road, regarded as one of the most dangerous in the country, on which 31 people lost their lives during three decades.

A stone plaque in memory of those who died will also be unveiled this afternoon.

Today’s opening marks the culmination for decades of campaigning and lobbying by the local N4 Action Group, of which Andrew Hannon is chairman.
