Local Businesses still under threat from cyber-criminals

Businesses in the North West are being warned of the dangers of cyberattacks following a small number of ransomware attacks in Donegal over the past number of months.

It’s understood that companies have been targeted as recently as this week.

Gardai are advising business owners and staff to listen to crime prevention advice to help limit exposure to a ransomware attack.

Ransomware is a form of malware that encrypts a victim’s files. The attacker then demands payment from the victim in order to restore access to the data.

The impact of ransomware attacks can be crippling as it prevents the victim from having access to essential data such as customer information or even accessing emails.

An Garda Síochána has confirmed to OceanFM news that they are investigating a report of a ransomware attack in respect of a business operating the Ballybofey area, which occurred on the night of October 10 into the early hours of October 11, 2021.

It’s understood that the Garda investigation is ongoing.
