Floodgate funding for Garavogue River

Funding has been allocated to upgrade 10 floodgates along the Garavogue in Sligo Town.

There are 14 in total but four must remain open to allow fish to make their way along the river.

The works will upgrade the penstocks to an electrical system that will be capable of monitoring water levels to automatically open or close.

Fine Gael Councillor, Thomas Walsh says it’s expected the upgrades will be finished before the end of the year.

He says the new system will prevent flooding along the river.
