Mark Feehily supporting calls for surrogacy legislation

A Sligo member of the band Westlife is supporting the campaign for legislation to regulate surrogacy.

Singer Mark Feehily says that while he has not spoken about politics in the past, this is about the welfare of children, such as his two-year old daughter.

Mark Feehily and his partner Caileann had their daughter through a surrogate in the United States.

He told RTE the campaign for surrogacy legislation is all about parents taking care of their children.

He says that in order to do that 100%, they had to be all legally covered.

A Bill on assisted human reproduction, which includes surrogacy, is being drafted by Department of Health officials, in conjunction with the office of the attorney general.

It’s as a growing number of families who have had children through surrogacy are calling for recognition under Irish law.

Currently, only the biological father can have guardianship over babies born through surrogacy.

The other patent can apply for guardianship after two years.

Mark Feehily says people think legislating for surrogacy is about getting two names on a birth certificate as parents.

But he pointed out it was about more than that.
